Some vets don't "advertise" that they treat exotics but will if the need arises. If your vet is unable to treat your exotic pet, here are some options. You can also call local zoos or aquaria and ask their medical directors for referrals.

 Vets

Zoonotic diseases are those that spread between pets and people. Here are some common ones.
Ask your vet about these if you feel you or your pet are at risk.

Mange (sarcoptes scabiei and cheyletiella) spread by direct contact with mites on the infected animal; causes itching, hair loss, dandruff or crusty lesions, and bleeding or oozing skin.

Hookworms are thick and short (about 6-12mm) worms that are whitish to reddish brown with a hooked front end. They live in the intestinal tract and are spread by fecal-oral contact and, in pets, from mother to offspring; causes diarrhea, anemia, weight loss, and deterioration of the skin and coat condition; adult dogs and cats may not show signs.

Roundworms are large (3-18cm) worms that are usually tightly coiled when passed and look like spaghetti. They live in the intestinal tract and are spread through fecal-oral contact, ingesting infected animals like rabbits or rodents; and, in pets, from mother to offspring; causes vomiting, failure to gain weight, and deterioration of the skin and coat condition.

Tapeworms are worms with a flattened, ribbon-like appearance. They live in the gastrointestinal tract and are spread by ingesting infected fleas, rodents and rabbits. Many pets show no signs; some might experience diarrhea and weight loss; pets may have anal itching that causes them to drag their hind ends across the floor.  (Source: Healthy Pet Magaine Summer 2010)

Caution: there are some over-the-counter "remedies" for worms and mange. Make sure they are safe and effective if you intend to use them.

IMPORTANT!

All BC vets do not participate in the  County's spay/neuter voucher program. If you intend to use a county voucher, verify your vet will honor it before you ask for a voucher or make an appointment.

Not all vets participate in the rabies clinics. Double-check before showing up. Rabies vaccinations are required
by NC law.

Over 2,000 spays & neuters since they opened in 2013! Way to go, Brunswick County pet owners and feral cat caretakers!
